Art Appreciation and Its Elements
The artistic appreciation can be considered as the area of knowledge that studies and values the different artistic manifestations that man has made through history. Its purpose is to understand art as an inherent activity in the development of every human society in culture.
As a critical analysis of a work of art obeys a need, mainly that of having a listener between the creative artist and the spectating public. It isn’t an intermediary as is the case of the exhibition hall or gallery owner. The critical function responds to the specialized interpretation so that whoever contemplates a work of art, receives tools that allow a better understanding of the language and the content of the artist’s work.
This means that the viewer shouldn’t be overwhelmed by an excess of theories, conceptual digressions or feel harassed with quotes from art experts. Anyone who contemplates a work of art should be part of the dialogue between all the actors without losing sight of the fact that the most important in the case of fine art are the paintings, sculptures, engravings and other manifestations that occur in the wide universe the artistic creation. Artistic appreciation is conceived as a process in which a unique and original work with certain attributes and different types of viewers in search of valuations, meaningful experiences and meanings are involved.
Elements of Artistic Appreciation
A work of art is a form of structured expression based on certain principles that order their signs in time and space (form) and created with communicative and/or expressive intention using their personal (technical) touch; where the viewer will attribute a theme and contents expressed with originality and imagination (substance).
In artistic expression, the substance is the theme that the artist tries to communicate; those aspects of daily life that want to express; as well as personal ideas, emotions, and moods that the artist want to share with the audience. It’s the originality, sincerity and imaginative quality that gives an artistic value to the substance.
It’s the type of artistic expression that the artist uses to transmit the substance, be it in a painting, poem, dance, play, or any other type of artistic expression. It’s important to point out that, although each expression of art creates certain rules, formulas, guidelines, conventions or schemes, these shouldn’t limit art.
This last element is no more than the adjustment or combination between the substance and the form; It’s the personal method of each artist, their own style. The technique is what manages to distinguish the work of one artist from another, manifesting the essence of each one.
To Really Appreciate Art
In our contemporary vision, is common knowledge that the ultimate purpose of all art is to convey the ideas or personal emotions of the artist, and at the same time provide an experience of artistic appreciation, for which it is necessary to analyze, interpret and value.
Analysis and Interpreting
Interact with the work observing or listening as the case may be, which will allow making a description of the constituent elements of the work, from the simplest to the most complex: sounds, colors, shapes, scenes, etc. Consider the expressive characteristics of the elements that make up an artistic work based on the theme and its content, having in mind to empathize and comprehend the vision of the artists.
After going thru the previous steps, an avid spectator will be in the possibility of making an informed judgment, locate an artwork within a genealogy, a historical period, a trend, genre, and an artistic style.
